1. Before you place your Christmas tree in a tree stand, cut about 1/2 to 1 inch off the butt of the tree. This allows for better water absorbtion. Make your cut as straight as possible to allow for easier placement into the tree stand and for maximum water absorbtion.
2. Avoid whittling off the sides of the tree butt in order to get it into a tree stand. The bark that you would be whittling off is what brings the most water up through the tree.
3. When choosing a location to display your Christmas tree, keep in mind that heat sources (vents, radiators, fireplaces, direct sunlight, etc.) will cause your Christmas tree to dry out quicker, thus causing the needles to fall off.
4. Remember to monitor the amount of water in the tree stand resevoir daily. Christmas trees like lots of water.
